Compared to Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops gives a much better opportunity to escape a gun battle that's not going your way. Determining if disengaging should be on your mind, even if you seemingly have the advantage.
There are some seriously vicious players online, who's accuracy is uncanny. If you get in a gun battle with them, you're almost certain to lose. If the enemy has a bead on you, and you don't have a real idea of where he's shooting from, you should seriously consider bailing. But before you do, toss a flash or stun grenade in the direction of the shooting to determine his location. if you get a hit marker, toss a grenade and maybe pick up a blind kill.
But before you duck around the corner and hit the sprint...
Leave a little present in the form of a claymore somewhere on the approach where you were hiding. If he's bloodthirsty for kills, he'll come in for the deathblow, and you'll get the last laugh. I do it all the time, and it works beautifully. :)

Tucking your tail between your legs protects the family jewels, and therefore should never be ruled out as a tactic. Sticking out a gunfight when you're losing just isn't smart.
